Mexico

Derek Johnson's trip notes from Mexico: Mexico City neighborhoods, Tulum beaches, Yucatan cenotes, and the country I keep coming back to.

Trip Notes

Mexico has been part of our story for years, but for us, Mexico mostly means Cabo.

Long before we became full-time travelers, Cabo was our reset button. Back when life revolved around building businesses and working nonstop, we'd escape there for a few days whenever we needed to recharge. Over time it became more than just a vacation spot. In 2020, we got married there at The Cape, a Thompson Hotel — exactly one week before the world shut down for COVID. Looking back, the timing feels surreal.

Since then, we've returned multiple times: with friends, with family, for sibling trips, and simply for a few quiet days to ourselves. There's something about Cabo that works especially well for that kind of travel. The weather is reliable, the flights are easy from the West Coast, the food is consistently excellent, and the pace of life encourages you to slow down.

One thing I think people underestimate about Cabo is the food scene. If you branch out beyond the obvious tourist spots, the food in this part of Mexico can be incredibly fresh and elevated. Flora Farms remains one of our favorite dinners anywhere — a beautiful farm-to-table restaurant tucked inland under strings of lights and surrounded by gardens. It's the kind of place that you talk about for years after.

We've also spent afternoons whale watching by boat, cruising out past El Arco at sunset, reading magazines by the pool for hours at a time, and doing very little besides relaxing. Honestly, that's part of the appeal. Cabo isn't always about packing your days with activities. Sometimes it's just about recovering from real life for a few days.

Outside Cabo, we've also spent time in other parts of Mexico over the years — working remotely from Tulum during our digital nomad phase, visiting Playa del Carmen during Day of the Dead, and Jessica even did a week-long meditation retreat one time in Cancún as well. Each destination had its own personality, but Cabo remains the place we return to most often.

Mexico is one of those countries where we still feel like we've barely scratched the surface. Mexico City, Oaxaca, and many other regions are still high on our list. But even with all the places we haven't seen yet, Mexico has already given us some of the most meaningful memories of our lives.
