Over 18 years it helped nonprofits raise more than $1 billion. He sold the company in 2025. After the sale he got sober, lost 30 pounds, traveled to 65+ countries across all seven continents, and wrote a book called The Disruption Formula. He and his wife Jessica live in Portugal. He writes essays on entrepreneurship, business strategy, investing, and disruption. He advises founders via one-hour strategy sessions. ## Bio I'm a recovering entrepreneur. I built a company for 18 years, sold it in 2025, and now spend my time figuring out what's next. Here's how I got here. I was born in New York City in 1984 and grew up in White Plains. My dad commuted into the city as a product manager at a large corporation. My mom, who was Canadian and had moved to the US to be with my dad, ran our home with me and my younger sister. When I was around two, my dad was promoted to General Manager of the Canadian OTC division of Sterling Drug. We moved to Aurora, Ontario, about 30 minutes from my mom's parents. A year and a half in, my dad got into a fight with his boss over how OTC products should be marketed differently from prescription drugs. They couldn't resolve it. The idea In January 2007, halfway through my second run at college (this time at the University of Houston, in their entrepreneurship program), I was talking to a friend who managed her sorority. She was venting. Her members didn't read her emails, didn't show up on time, didn't know what was happening in the chapter. This was pre-iPhone. To check email you had to be sitting at a computer, and most college students during the day weren't. But they all had cell phones. The idea arrived in a single thought. What if she could text every member at once? Group texting barely existed. Mass texting was unheard of. In October 2016, I went to a business conference in Seattle expecting the usual. Instead, I heard a lawn care guy named Barrett Ersek tell a story that rewired how I think about business. He wasn't a Silicon Valley founder. He wasn't venture-backed. He ran a lawn care company in Philadelphia that had been stuck at $2 million in revenue for six years. Then he changed one thing. Not the product. Not the fertilizer. Not the trucks. He changed how long it took to give a customer a quote. He took it from three weeks down to instant. In his first year, his new company hit $2 million in seven months. By year six it was $16 million. ServiceMaster bought him out. Over the last two decades, I’ve built, scaled, and eventually exited a software company. Along the way, I’ve lived through many of the situations founders only hear about after they happen, usually the hard way. I’ve raised capital from investors, then learned what I should have negotiated differently. I’ve managed a board of directors through both strong growth and very difficult quarters. I’ve navigated a co-founder departure, structured founder buyouts, and negotiated acquisition offers, including ones I ultimately walked away from.
